The tools contained in this package — Concentric Circles, Cylinder, Doughnuts, Sounder,Waco, Fractals, Name Stamp, Spiral, Time Stamp, Undo Killer, Coil tool and Resistor tools — are additional external tools that can be used with Canvas 3.0. To install them, simply drop them into your Canvas Tools folder when Canvas is not running. The next time you launch Canvas, these tools will load with the application. Like all of Canvas’s external tools, they can be turned on and off using the ToolPicker. Refer to your Canvas 3.0 manual for instructions on using ToolPicker.
All but the Waco tool and Undo Killer are used to create objects. Therefore, they will all appear in the Object Tools palette in the Canvas Tool Box. You must choose the tool’s icon to create its object. To do so, hold down the pointer on the Object Tools palette icon in the Canvas Tool Box to display the Object Tools palette and drag to select the appropriate tool. If you tear off the Object Tools palette, you can simply click the appropriate tool’s icon to create its object.
Concentric Circles
The Concentric Circles tool lets you create objects that comprise ellipses with a common center. To create a Concentric Circle object, choose the Concentric Circle tool, hold down the pointer where you want its top left corner to appear, and drag to its bottom right corner. Release the mouse button when you are finished. The concentric circle object will appear within the bounding rectangle defined by your drag and will have the properties currently showing in the Tool Box.
The Concentric Circle tool has a manager which lets you lets you specify the number of ellipses in the your concentric circles objects as well as the distance between each of the ellipses. To open the manager, either double-click the tool’s icon in the Canvas Tool Box or choose Concentric Circles from the Managers submenu in the Edit menu.
To specify the number of ellipses in the shape, type the desired number in the Number of Circles text box. The distance between the ellipses is controlled by the Space Circles every text box. To specify the distance between each ellipse, type the number of pixels that you want between each ellipse. The radius of the center ellipse will vary depending upon the size of the rectangle defined by your drag. If you type 0, the center ellipse’s radius will be equal to the distance between each ellipse. When you have finished entering values, click OK. The setting you indicate will be the default setting for creating Concentric Circle objects. Subsequent Concentric Circle objects you create will be drawn to the specifications you indicated.
In addition to editing concentric circles object like other Canvas objects, you can also edit the spacing and number of circles. To do so, double-click the object or select it and choose Edit Concentric Circles (Command - E) from the Object menu. The Edit Circles dialog box will appear. Follow the instructions for the Concentric Circle Manager when using this dialog box. Using the Edit Circles dialog box changes only the selected object; it does not change the current default settings for creating Concentric Circle objects.
Cylinder
The Cylinder tool lets you create two-dimensional cylindrical objects. To create a cylinder, choose the Cylinder tool, hold down the pointer where you want its top left corner to appear, and drag to its bottom right corner. Release the mouse button when you are finished. The cylinder will appear within the bounding rectangle defined by your drag and will have the properties currently showing in the Tool Box. The cylinder can then be edited like other Canvas objects.
Doughnuts
The Doughnuts tool lets you create an elliptical shaped object with a hole cut out of its center. To create a doughnut, choose the Doughnuts tool, hold down the pointer where you want its top left corner to appear, and drag to its bottom right corner. Release the mouse button when you are finished. The doughnut will appear within the bounding rectangle defined by your drag and will have the properties currently showing in the Tool Box. The doughnut can then be edited like other Canvas objects.
Sounder
The Sounder tool lets you place a sound object in your document. To do so, choose the Sounder tool and click where you want the sound object to be. A directory dialog box will appear for you to select the sound that you want the sound object to play. Choose a sound and click Open. An object that looks like the tool’s icon will appear in your document. The sound will be attached to this object. Sound objects can be edited like other Canvas objects, but do not print. They play their sounds whenever you double-click them or perform an action which causes the sound object to redraw. Sound objects can be added to side shows, where they are heard but not seen. Add them to the layer that succeeds the layer on which you want them to play. To play a sound on the last slide, add a blank slide to your slide show.
Waco Tool
The Waco Tool allows for the use of Wacom Tablets with Canvas 3.
The Fractals tool
The Fractals tool creates fractal lines and lets you add a fractal effect to selected draw objects.
To use this tool to create fractal lines, first select the Fractal tool icon (a fractal line) from the Object Tools palette. The pointer will change to a crosshair. Place the pointer in your document where you want the fractal line to begin and drag to draw it. Release the mouse button when you are finished. Canvas considers the new object a polygon and treats it accordingly.
You can set the wiggle and density of your fractal lines using the Fractal Manager. To open the Fractal Manager, double-click the Fractal tool icon in the Object Tools palette or choose Fractals from the Managers submenu in the Edit menu. Type the desired Wiggle and Density in the corresponding text boxes. Click OK to save your settings or Cancel to disregard them.
You can set a Wiggle value between 1 and 20 and a Density value between 1 and 5. A high Wiggle value results in a line with greater deviations from the center. A low Wiggle value results in a line that stays closer to its center. A low Density value results in a more angular line. A high Density line has more points, resulting in a more fluid line. When you are finished, click OK to save your settings or Cancel to disregard them.
To add a fractal effect to selected draw objects, select the objects and choose Fractalize from the Special Effects submenu in the Effects menu. The Fractal Line Manager will appear. Set the desired Wiggle and Density values (see above) and click OK to add a fractal effect to the selected objects.
The Name Stamp tool
The Name Stamp tool lets you stamp the document's name in your document. To use this tool, select the Name Stamp tool icon (the “NAME” icon) from the Object Tools palette and click to place the document's name in the desired location. The Name Stamp tool uses the default foreground and background colors, font, text size, and text styles to create its objects. You can also change the foreground and background colors, font, text size, and text styles of selected Name Stamp objects.
The Name Stamp object is dynamic. If you change the name of the document, the name in the Name Stamp object changes accordingly when the next screen redraw occurs. You can force a screen redraw by typing Command-K or choosing the Refresh option from the Display submenu in the Layout menu
The Spiral tool
The Spiral tool creates spiral-shaped Bézier curves. To use this tool, first select the Spiral tool icon (a spiral) from the Object Tools palette. The pointer will change to a crosshair. Place the pointer in your document where you want the spiral to begin and drag to draw it. Release the mouse button when you are finished.
The Spiral Manager is a dialog box which lets you set the number of spirals in your Spiral tool objects. To open this dialog box, double-click the Spiral tool icon in the Object Tools palette or choose Spirals from the Managers submenu in the Edit menu. Type the number of spirals wanted in the corresponding text box. When you are finished, click OK to save your settings or Cancel to disregard them. The next time you use the Spiral tool you will create a spiral with the number of spirals you specified.
The Time Stamp tool
The Time Stamp tool lets you stamp the current date and time setting of your computer into your document. To use this tool, select the Time Stamp tool icon (a small clock) from the Object Tools palette and click to place the current date and time in the desired location. The Time Stamp tool uses the default foreground and background colors, font, text size, and text styles to create its objects. You can also change the foreground and background colors, font, text size, and text styles of selected Time Stamp objects.
Time Stamp objects are dynamic and update whenever a screen redraw occurs. You can force a screen redraw by typing Command-K or choosing the Refresh option from the Display submenu in the Layout menu.
The Undo Killer tool
The Undo Killer tool places the Undo menu in your Canvas menu bar. The Undo menu lets you turn Canvas’s Undo feature on and off. Turning off Undo makes Canvas run faster and saves memory, since Canvas does not have to store undo information for your actions. This is especially useful when you are performing a complex command on a large number of objects.
To turn off Undo, choose Undo Off from the Undo menu. To turn Undo on again, choose Undo On from the Undo menu. The Undo command will then be disabled or enabled for your subsequent actions and a check mark will appear next to the command you have chosen.
If you turn off Undo, make sure you save your document before you perform any actions that you might need to undo. If you make a mistake, you can then open the File menu and choose the Revert command to return to the last saved version of your document.
You cannot turn off the Undo command for the following actions:
Using the Blend… command
Applying a hatch pattern
Applying a gradient fill
Binding text
Creating Bézier curves from text
Using the Combine submenu options
Coil
The Coil tool lets you create the symbol for an electrical coil. To create a coil, select the Coil tool, hold down the pointer where you want the coil to start, and drag to where you want it to end. Release the mouse button when you are finished. The coil will appear within a bounding rectangle and will have the properties currently showing in the Tool Box. Once created, Canvas considers the coil to be a Bézier curve. It can then be edited like other Bézier curves. Refer to your Canvas manual for information on editing Bézier curves.
Resistor
The Resistor tool lets you create the symbol for an electrical resistor. To create a resistor, select the Resistor tool, hold down the pointer where you want the resistor to start, and drag to where you want it to end. Release the mouse button when you are finished. The resistor will appear within a bounding rectangle and will have the properties currently showing in the Tool Box. Once created, Canvas considers the resistor to be a polygon. It can then be edited like other polygons. Refer to your Canvas manual for information on editing polygons.
Both the Coil & Resistor tools are used to create objects that are standard symbols for electrical circuitry illustrations. They will each appear in the Object Tools palette in the Canvas Tool Box. You must select the tool’s icon to create its object. To do so, hold down the pointer on the Object Tools palette icon in the Canvas Tool Box to display the Object Tools palette and drag to select the appropriate tool. If you tear off the Object Tools palette, you can simply click the appropriate tool’s icon to select the tool.
